100 Most Influential Photos

Oct - 12 2023 | no comments | By

This is a picture of Muhammad Ali Vs. Sonny Liston shot by Neil Leifer in 1965. The story behind this photo is 23-year-old heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali squared off against 34-year-old Sonny Liston, the man he’d snatched the title from the previous year. One minute and 44 seconds into the first round, Ali’s right fist connected with Liston’s chin and Liston went down. Leifer snapped the photo of the champ towering over his vanquished opponent and taunting him, “Get up and fight, sucker!” I selected this photo because of its backstory.

This is a picture of the Flag Raising On Iwo Jima shot by Joe Rosenthal in 1945. The story behind the photo is the Americans needed Iwo Jima as an air base, but the Japanese had dug in. U.S. troops landed on February 19, 1945, beginning a month of fighting that claimed the lives of 6,800 Americans and 21,000 Japanese. On the fifth day of battle, the Marines captured Mount Suribachi. An American flag was quickly raised, but a commander called for a bigger one, in part to inspire his men and demoralize his opponents. I selected this photo because it shows our history at war.

This is a photo of Michael Jordan shot by Co Rentmeester in 1984. This is a a beautiful image, but one unlikely to have endured had Nike not devised a logo for its young star that bore a striking resemblance to the photo. Seeking design inspiration for its first Air Jordan sneakers, Nike paid Rentmeester $150 for temporary use of his slides from the life shoot. Soon, “Jumpman” was etched onto shoes, clothing and bedroom walls around the world, eventually becoming one of the most popular commercial icons of all time. I selected this photo because Michael Jordan is one of my favorite sport players of all time.

White Balance

Oct - 06 2023 | no comments | By

White balance balances the color temperature in your image. It adds the opposite color to the image in an attempt to bring the color temperature back to neutral. Instead of whites appearing blue or orange, they should appear white after correctly white balancing an image. White balance in digital photography means adjusting colors so that the image looks more natural. We go through the process of adjusting colors to primarily get rid of color casts, in order to try to resemble the colors in our images with reality.

White Balance Settings

  • Sunny, which works for mid-morning and mid-afternoon sun
  • Shade, which works for scenarios with heavy shade (e.g., portraits under a tree)
  • Cloudy, which works for outdoor scenes featuring overcast lighting
  • Flash, which works for scenes lit by standard off-camera speedlights and pop-up flashes
  • Incandescent, which works for indoor scenes lit by standard warm bulbs
  • Fluorescent, which works for indoor scenes lit by fluorescent bulbs

Action & Motion

Some techniques for shooting action sharp are to be far from the subject and use a long lens. You also need to use a fast shutter speed like 1/2000 of a sec so you can capture the moment. Techniques for shooting motion blur are to be close but not too far from the subject and use a slow shutter speed such as 1/10 of a sec to give the subject a blurred effect when it’s making movement.

Depth of Field

Depth of field (DoF) is the distance from the subject to the camera. The closer you are to the subject, the DoF will be shallow in the photo. The further you go from the subject will deepen the DoF making it a good DoF.

There are many things of my interest in this collage. The car in the image is a 1969 Corvette Stingray. Its my dream car and I hope to get it one day. The sport I enjoy watching is football and my favorite team is the San Francisco 49ers. I enjoy watching Youtube and my favorite music artist is J. Cole. I also enjoy playing video games and play on PlayStation.

I’m a Taurus and my birth month is May. Most of my family are from Cambodia and I’m also half Cambodian. I like the brands Nike and Jordan. I love to eat all kinds of food, especially when it’s spicy, but one of my favorites are hot wings. I don’t drink soda much but my favorite is Dr. Pepper. My favorite subject is Math.

Framing

M, f/5.0, 1/250 SS, 3200 ISO, 40mm

M, f/4.5, 1/1000 SS, 3200 ISO, 33mm

  1. I think both have good composition as they both have an interesting subject of interest placed into a frame.
  2. I think my photos were well edited. I edited things out that were in the background to give more the subject more attention.
  3. I would’ve the framing all little better on both images looking back at them. The frames weren’t even on all sides, but the photo still came out good.
  4. I think my first image of (nicknamed) Whopper should make the blog home page because it’s funny, creates a memory, and shows good framing.

Alternate Camera Angles

Sep - 01 2023 | no comments | By

This photo is taken from an interesting angle. It’s taken from a bug’s eye view, below, of trees with no leaves. It gives the trees more depth and a better way of looking how the trees are shaped. The dark color of the trees really contrasts with the blue sky which makes it very eye appealing. The trees are used as leading lines that create more movement and depth in the image. I like the image as it shows a different way of viewing certain objects. Overall, it’s a very good photo that provides an alternate camera angle and perspective.
